Newport, Rhode Island is a city that has seen a rich history. From the beginning, it has been tied to the sea. In fact, a large portion of the area’s economy has come from the shipping industry. The town has also seen a rise in the service sector. With its picturesque location, it has developed as a popular resort town.
A major part of the city’s economic success has been the presence of the United States Navy. For over a century, the Navy has played an important role in the development of the community. It is currently the largest employer in the city. There are more than 9,000 military and civilian personnel who work at the base. They include naval officers, scientists, and other professionals.
The US Navy has been a strong influence on the development of Newport, but its roots are not limited to the military. Some of the area’s earliest settlers were religious refugees from Massachusetts. This group settled in the northern part of the island. By 1700, half of the population was members of the Society of Friends.
Other settlers included Quakers and Jews. The native people had been living in the area for thousands of years and had developed very sophisticated fishing practices. During the colonial era, Newport became the rum capital of the world.
Throughout the 1800s, Gilded Age summer colonists retreated to the area’s “cottages” for the summer months. These families came from elite families from New York, South Carolina, and elsewhere. They built many of the mansions that now grace the Newport landscape.
After the Civil War, the Naval War College was established on Aquidneck Island. The Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a research facility, is also located in Newport.
Another strong influence on the city’s development was the Yaquina Bay Bridge. The bridge helped make the city more cohesive and allowed for growth along Highway 101.
Newport has a strong commitment to religion. The Newport Hospital offers a full range of medical services, from surgical care to diagnostic services. Since 2004, the hospital has been a Magnet hospital.
Newport’s most famous landmark is the Yaquina Bay Bridge. The city is a popular vacation destination and has an enviable quality of life. Whether you want to explore the historic mansions or enjoy an afternoon picnic on the beach, there are plenty of things to do in this charming area.
If you are interested in the city’s history, consider a visit to the Museum of Newport History. Or check out the Audrain Automobile Museum. Many of the area’s historical mansions have been restored and open for the public to view.
Newport is a diverse community that has adapted to changes in the economy. A wide variety of trades has contributed to the local economy, including tourism, marine science, and shipbuilding. Several major private employers have made homes in the area. Despite the changing economy, the community continues to maintain a commitment to the freedom of conscience and liberty of religion.
